Set weight loss goals

Human beings are complex animals, which is why it’s important to set weight loss goals. We all possess many different drives and motivations. Some of these drives are mostly unconscious, stemming from our basic natural instincts. Other drives are more conscious, such as our wants, desires, and intentions. Our conscious and unconscious motivations are frequently in conflict. This is one reason why it can be hard to stay on a certain course of action — our desires and drives are constantly contradicting each other.

Set Weight Loss Goals

Sometime you will feel very motivated by your weight loss goals and you will find it easy to resist the carton of butter pecan ice cream in the freezer. You happily engage in your walking or jogging program, even when it’s cold and rainy outside. But at other times, you find it hard to remember why you even wanted to resist the delicious ice cream or drag yourself off the comfortable sofa.

With so many motivations pulling you in opposite directions how do you stay focused on your weight loss objectives?

First, let’s acknowledge that you will sometimes stray from any plan, no matter how hard you try. It’s simply a part of human nature. You must accept your temporary weakness and not give up on your larger goal. You must simply get back on track as soon as possible without being too self-critical or calling yourself a failure.

Set weight loss goals and strategies. Weight loss goals can be divided into two types: short term goals and medium to long term goals. Both are important to your success.

Set weight loss goals

The long term goal is the end point of your weight loss journey. The goal may be losing 10, 30, or 100 pounds, and it is based on who you want to be in the future — healthier, more attractive, and more confident.

You will occasionally forget why you wanted to lose weight in the first place. It’s important to keep your long term goal clear in your mind. Visualize the person you want to be and the way you want to feel about yourself. Use this mental picture to inspire yourself and keep you on track.

While you are working towards a long term goal, it’s vital to set short term goals so you can feel a regular sense of accomplishment and you know you are heading in the right direction. Humans are more motivated by a short term, easily attainable goal than a long term dream. Setting short term goals of losing one or two pounds this week, exercising five days out of seven, and writing in your food diary every day will influence the decisions you make daily and even hourly.

Of course, you have to think carefully about your goals and set goals that are both meaningful to you and achievable with a reasonable effort. Smart goal setting is a powerful strategy for achieving anything worthwhile, including losing weight. Without clear goals, you will drift along in life, wanting to lose weight but never quite taking the necessary action.
